Myofascial Slings: The Secret to Efficient Running

Perhaps the most overlooked concept in running performance is how the body works through slings. Your muscles don't function in isolation. Instead, they work together in long chains of connective tissue and muscle that connect one shoulder to the opposite hip.


The most important for runners is the Posterior Oblique Sling, which connects:

  • Latissimus dorsi

  • Thoracolumbar fascia

  • Gluteus maximus

  • Opposite hamstrings


When your right arm swings forward, your left glute should activate simultaneously. This cross-body connection creates rotational stability and helps propel you forward efficiently.

If this sling isn't functioning well, you'll often compensate with:

  • Overworking the hip flexors

  • Low back tightness

  • Hamstring strains

  • Poor running economy


Another important system is the Anterior Oblique Sling, which includes:

  • External oblique

  • Internal oblique

  • Opposite adductors

  • Abdominal fascia


This sling helps control trunk rotation while stabilizing the pelvis during stance. Training these systems improves how efficiently force moves through your body instead of getting lost at the trunk.


Excellent cross-sling exercises include:

  • Bird dogs with resistance

  • Half-kneeling cable chops

  • Single-leg straight leg deadlifts with rowing movements

  • Crawling variations

  • Split-stance medicine ball throws


These exercises closely resemble how your body actually functions while running.


Strength Before Endurance

Many runners focus on doing longer planks or higher repetitions. While muscular endurance matters, strength should come first. A stronger core can handle each stride with less relative effort. Once strength improves, endurance naturally becomes more efficient.


Think of it this way: If every running stride requires 30% of your core's maximum capacity, you'll fatigue much more slowly than if each stride requires 70%. Increasing strength increases your reserve.


Bringing It All Together

An effective core program for runners should include:

  • Strength in all three planes of motion

  • Heavy loading to build force absorption

  • Explosive training to develop rapid force production

  • Cross-sling exercises that integrate the upper and lower body

  • Single-leg movements that mimic the demands of running


Your core is the transmission between your arms and legs. Every ounce of force your hips generate has to travel through it before propelling you forward. When that transmission is strong, force is transferred efficiently, your stride becomes smoother, and your body wastes less energy.

Running isn't just about strong legs.It's about how well your entire body works together. A resilient core allows you to maintain posture late in a race, stabilize your pelvis with every foot strike, reduce unnecessary movement, and maximize the power generated by your legs.


Train your core the way you run: in multiple planes, under meaningful load, with explosive intent, and through coordinated cross-body movement. Do that consistently, and you'll build a body that's not only stronger in the gym but also faster, more efficient, and more durable on the road or trail.
